WE’RE KICKING OFF THE PROJECT IN THE VILLAGE OF CURIMÓN / / / / / / / / / /

CONTEXT OF THE PROJECT
Throughout the year of 2019 we are going to collaborate with the Lepe Foundation and the community of Curimón in the context of the festivities in memory of Saint Francis, a non-material heritage of the Aconcagua Valley in the region of Valparaíso.
As a part of the program “Vivo Curimón”, implemented by the Lepe Foundation, the Aldea Foundation will construct a participatory plan to reinforce the memory of the festivities for Saint Francis. This happens in a close collaboration with the local community and the different stakeholders in the field.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The applied approach is based on the conceptual framework of participatory action. The framework especially regards the patrimony’s spatial dimension, whose representations and imaginaries shape the cultural significances of the assets and the landscape of Curimón. Their history dates back to the pre-hispanic times of the Mapuche and Pincuche, dominated by the Inca presence, and later on as a center of Spanish colonisation. Therefore, the Saint Francis ceremony is also a historic scenery of Chile’s independence, which gave the narrative at an official level, and hid its social and cultural history. Nevertheless, its memory and ritual deployment maintained alive, at least partly; by bypassing socio-demographic transformation processes and rural production patterns in its recent past.
In Curimón in the late 16th century a Franciscan order was established which endured until 2005, and its material heritage is nowadays reflected by their convent church (declared a national monument since 1971), in combination with the festivity of Saint Francis of Assisi, taking place on 4th and 5th October every year.
Currently, Curimón has 7 neighbourhood associations: Villa los Naranjos, Camino del Inca, Curimón centro, Cerro San José, Valle Curimón, Curimón Primera Etapa, Curimón Segunda Etapa. In total there are 16 neighbourhood associations on the South coast of the Aconcagua river which belong to different villages. Historically, all of them are participating in the festivities of Saint Francis.
